Mentorship plays a crucial role in supporting newly hired individuals, as administrators carefully choose mentors who will provide guidance and support throughout their first year in the district.

For educators with less than five years of experience, an additional two years of mentoring is provided by a selected colleague.

These mentors offer invaluable assistance to their newly joined colleagues by offering guidance and support on various aspects:

  • Creating instructional materials
  • Accessing curriculum resources
  • Developing lesson plans
  • Classroom management
  • Understanding district policies

A mentor is not someone who walks ahead of you to show you how they did it. A mentor walks alongside you to show you what you can do

Birmingham Public Schools places great importance on the four C's when it comes to how our mentors offer support and facilitate learning for the new employees they are collaborating with.

Connection: How can a mentor help with a connection to the culture at a building, a grade level team, a department or fellow colleague?

Communication: How can a mentor provide "just in time" communication / information or examples to help with evaluation documentation, conferences, or parent communication?

Collaboration: How can a mentor provide ways to collaborate in lesson planning & reflection, opportunities for visiting other classrooms, digging into new learning together?

Caring: How can a mentor help provide support for a colleague's well-being as a new member of our community?
